SUCCESS STORIES

"Hello, my name is Dorian, and I have a learning disability and Autism. I enrolled in a vocational training program that focused on independent living, basic living, social skills, and community participation. Through hands-on training and support from an experienced instructor such as Shanta, I developed my skills in customer service as a courtesy clerk/grocery bagger. After receiving various job skills in the vocational program within assigned worksites, I was thrilled to secure a job as a courtesy clerk/grocery bagger. The vocational training program not only equipped me with the necessary skills but also helped me build confidence and develop a strong work ethic. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my interest in working and contributing to the community in the food industry. This job has given me a sense of purpose and independence, and I am grateful for the vocational training program that made it possible. I hope my story inspires others with special needs to explore their interests and pursue fulfilling careers."

"Hi, my name is Tega, and I have Autism. After completing a vocational training program that focused on job skills, I was determined to find a college to study in the IT field. With the help of my determined parents and with Shanta’s support, agencies were located which specialize in supporting individuals with disabilities, I landed a college to study agriculture and technology with support. I am grateful for the inclusive work environment that values diversity and provides accommodations to meet my needs. The job training at diverse worksites and suggested courses has allowed me to utilize my strengths, problem-solving skills, and passion for technology. I am proud to be a contributing member of the team and to prove that individuals with special needs can excel in the workforce. I hope my story encourages others to pursue their career goals and never give up on their dreams."

Zach has successfully completed job skills training through the Life Strive Program. During his time with us, Zach demonstrated remarkable growth and dedication to his career development. He has since secured employment at Chipotle Restaurant, where he is applying the practical skills acquired through our program. Beyond his career achievements, Zach has shown commendable initiative in his personal development. His commitment to physical fitness through regular gym attendance has notably enhanced his self-confidence. This newfound confidence, combined with his career experience, has inspired him to explore additional career opportunities aligned with his long-term aspirations. The Life Strive Program remains committed to supporting Zach as he continues his journey toward his dream career. His progress thus far has been skillful, and his family and I are immensely proud of his progress. Zach's success story exemplifies the positive impact of our program's mission to empower individuals in reaching their full potential.

Three decades ago, I had the privilege of establishing a groundbreaking vocational training program at the Olive Graham Center for Marlboro County Schools, designed to empower special needs individuals aged 18 and older. Our innovative approach partnered with local South Carolina businesses, who provided real work opportunities that allowed our students to earn income while developing valuable job skills. One of our remarkable success stories is Hope K., who exemplifies the lasting impact of our program. For 30 years, Hope has been a dedicated employee within what is now the Marlboro County Disabilities Program. She takes pride in maintaining office facilities and handling various responsibilities, all while earning fair compensation for her work. Hope's journey represents everything we envisioned when creating this program – fostering independence, dignity, and meaningful contribution to our community. Her three decades of consistent employment demonstrate that with the right support and opportunities, individuals with special needs can build fulfilling, long-term careers. As I reflect on Hope's achievement, I am filled with pride knowing that our program helped lay the foundation for her success. Her story continues to inspire us and proves that when we invest in vocational training and create inclusive workplaces, everyone benefits. Hope is more than an employee – she is a testament to the power of believing in people's potential and providing them the chance to shine. Congratulations, Hope, on 30 years of dedicated service. You've shown us all what's possible when determination meets opportunity.
